“Cairn” featured on The Writer’s Almanac

I was excited to have my poem, “Cairn,” from Speak, Cairn featured on The Writer’s Almanac newsletter and podcast on March 25.

How fun to be in the company of Flannery O’Connor, Kate DiCamillo, and Gloria Steinem!

Cairn

We speak to each other through stones.
We kneel before the cairn like prayer.
The hard stones comfort those who roam:
you’re not lost, you are here, where we were.

We kneel before the cairn like prayer.
We wander, searching for the next message:
you’re not lost, you are here, where we were.
To belong we surrender our wildness.

The landscape is filled with messages,
stacked stones that comfort those who roam.
To belong we surrender our wildness,
we speak to each other through stones.

Listen to the poem read aloud at 04:19.
